On November 13, 1969, Spiro T. Agnew, Republican Vice President under Richard M. Nixon, made this address. As vice president, Agnew was his party's lead speaker during the 1970 congressional campaign and he became known for his controversial speeches. He once claimed that opponents of the Vietnam War were encouraged by "an effete corps of impudent snobs," and charged that "a small and unelected elite" controlled television news.
