On July 26, 1952, Governor Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois reluctantly accepted the Democratic nomination for the 1952 presidential election. His earnest campaign speeches, this one from September 16, however, could not win him a victory over his widely popular opponent, Republican candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Following his defeat, Stevenson remained the titular Democratic party leader, speaking vigorously against the Eisenhower administration.
