PUBLISHER'S SUMMARY:

After his splash with the Segway scooter, the obsessive innovator talks about his latest project: a revolutionary generator and water purifier for third world nations.

Dean Kamen is an inventor, physicist, and entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to developing technologies that help people lead better lives. His latest invention, the Segway Human Transporter (HT) improves upon the most basic form of transportation: walking. As a result, the Segway HT is a breakthrough technology to enhance the way people work and live. Mr. Kamen also founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989, an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use, and enjoy science and technology. He remains the driving force behind the organization and its FIRST Robotics Competition, which teams professional engineers with high school students nationwide. Mr. Kamen has received numerous awards and accolades, including the National Medal of Technology in 2000, the Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2002 for Invention and Innovation, and the 2002 Ralph Coats Roe Medal.

Amy Harmon has been a technology correspondent since joining The New York Times in 1997. Ms. Harmon's article about a black Internet entrepreneur and his white partner was part of the Times' series on race relations that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. Ms. Harmon has written about the rise of Internet file-swapping and the impact of digital technology on intellectual property. She has recently begun to cover the growing intersection between health and technology.

This TimesTalk event was recorded on January 11, 2004.
