PUBLISHER'S SUMMARY:

NPR's Mike Shuster reports on Germany's long and deep struggle with its legacy of genocide. Germany is alive with the memory of the Second World War, Adolf Hitler, and the Holocaust. In memorials and public monuments, Germany is recreating and rethinking its past. The intent is to decentralize commemoration, rather than gather all the memories into one museum. Host Neal Conan talks with NPR's Loren Jenkins, the editor behind the War Crimes series. NPR's Anne Garrels reports from Pnom Penh, Cambodia on how people in that country are reckoning with their past. More than a million Cambodians died under the Khmer Rouge regime that ruled the country between 1975 and 1979. Many Cambodians want to see surviving Khmer leaders put on trial, but so far, that has not happened. Investigators from the war crimes tribunal in the Hague are still pursing cases against suspected war criminals in the former Yugoslavia. But there are others digging through the mass graves who are working for the survivors. NPR's Christopher Joyce reports on a unique project in Bosnia designed to help families recover and identify victims of war crimes. (Original Broadcast Date: February 19, 2000)
