For former San Francisco cop turned bartender Dismas Hardy, a black and tan - a mixture of Guinness Stout and Bass Ale - is the drink of choice. But the news that his bar boss's young brother-in-law has met an untimely end calls for something stronger. Eddie Cochran was found in a deserted company parking lot with a gun in his hand, a single bullet in his head, and an unfinished note nearby. The cops label it a suicide, prepared to call it a day - but even to a lapsed Catholic like Hardy, Eddie's suicide sounds wrong. He just didn't seem the type.

Hardy's doubts lead him to do some soul-searching and a little detective work. But when he goes fishing for clues, what he comes up with sends him reeling. Blood ties still bind Eddie's family - Erin, his beautiful mother, Frannie, the pregnant widow he left behind, his 2 brothers, and their compassionate parish priest, Father Jim Cavanaugh. But old secrets and raw angers gnaw at the fabric of their lives. And Hardy's instincts warn him - someone has committed a cardinal sin, and someone else is going to die.
