On December 11, 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne of Great Britain and the British Empire to marry a twice-divorced American woman named Wallis Warfield Simpson. In a radio broadcast, he told the world that he had "found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King...without the help and support of the woman I love."
