On June 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy spoke at the Berlin Wall, addressing a crowd of over 150,000 West Berliners whose city stood alone surrounded by the Communist bloc. In this speech, he says, "All free men wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin," making a strident denunciation of Communist philosophy, as well as, : "Ich bin ein Berliner," (I am a Berliner), implying solidarity with West Berlin's citizens.
